CALIFORNIA SHUTTERS: SOME OF THE BEST WINDOW COVERINGS FOR YOUR SPACE

California shutters, sometimes also called “plantation shutters”, are popular in Milton and are one of our favourite shutter options to install. With their thin louvers these shutters offer increased privacy even when open and also offer plenty of light and heat control. However, the best part might just be their look. They add a unique feel to any room and can look either modern and crisp, or very elegant and full of character. It’s all in what you pair them with.

Need ideas for plantation shutters in your Milton home? Contact us to set up an in-home consultation with one of our design experts so you can see exactly what your selection would look like in your space. If you’d like to learn more first, read on for some great California shutter ideas.

Modern White Spaces

California shutters, when in their classic white, add a touch of interest in a modern space. Where clean lines and neutrals dominate, white California shutters fit right in. Particularly in living rooms, where you might want a bit of extra interest, while not taking too much attention away from larger elements like couches and fireplaces. While they have a reputation for traditional looks, you may be surprised at how contemporary plantation shutters look in these circumstances.

Wooden California Shutters

Keeping your plantation shutters in a natural wood tone can be a great choice, especially for spaces that already make great use of wood or could use the extra warmth. For example, placing light wooden shutters in a bathroom can help make the space feel both more comfortable and break up the monotony of a (typically) white bathroom. We suggest that you try to match the wood of your shutters to the other wooden elements in the bathroom—and we can help with custom shades.

Green California Shutters

Are you interested in doing something a little more unusual with your California shutters? One option we love is to paint them green, especially in homes with lots of greenery, landscaping, and a need to connect the indoor and outdoor spaces. Green shutters bridge the gap and make both the inside and outside seem more lively. Imagine opening your deep green shutters to see your blooming gardens beyond.

Curved California Shutters

We can produce custom, curved California shutters that work with unusual windows. Many homes make elegant architectural statements with curved windows, which may be otherwise hard to find window dressings for. California shutters are a great solution that maintains the elegance of the window.

SELECTING THE PERFECT WINDOW COVERING FOR YOU

It can be both exciting and daunting to look at a blank slate. That might be your experience if you’re reconsidering your window covering options. When you can choose anything, and you’re looking for perfection, you might get overwhelmed.

In this quick guide, we hope to walk you through your basic window covering options so you can quickly start narrowing down which of the three biggest window dressing options might work for you and your home in Milton, the GTA, and the surrounding areas. Or if you want to see what works for you right away, you can contact us to schedule an in-home consultation with one of our expert design professionals to see exactly what your options will look like in your space.

What Makes Blinds Perfect?

Blinds are window dressing options with horizontal slats. Those slats can be made of a wide range of materials. They are also available in different thicknesses. Blinds may be more challenging to clean, but they also tend to be more durable. Plus, they offer more combinations for light and privacy control, which may be important to you.

In general, choose blinds if you like the look, want something durable, and think it’s important to have partial privacy options, like having the blinds drawn down but the slats a bit open.

What Makes Shades Perfect?

Shades are window coverings that are made out of one or more pieces of fabric. That fabric can be almost any material. We have a very large selection of fabric colors and styles, ranging from simple white to complex and bright patterns which might enhance a specific interior design style in your home.

Shades don’t have the same number of options as blinds: they are either open or closed. But, with sheer fabrics, you can let some light in without allowing the neighbors any view of your home. Or, you can choose thick black-out shades which block all of your light. Plus, as they are made of one sheet of fabric, they are simpler to clean.

In general, choose shades if you love the look of a specific fabric, care about ease of cleaning for your window coverings, and don’t need as many light-control and privacy options as blinds offer.

What Makes Shutters Perfect?

Shutters are your third option. They are made of sturdy materials, fitted to your windows, and offer either open or closed functionality for your windows. You can also change how much light they’re letting in at any given moment for when you need that sunlight but don’t want its full force. They are best when you love the style, want to be able to customize how much light you let into your space, and want something that will stay in your home for years.

AFFORDABLE WINDOW BLINDS: CHOOSING THE RIGHT WINDOW TREATMENT

When you’re improving your Milton home, you’re working on a budget—who isn’t? In order to make the most of it, you want to keep your improvements as affordable as possible, while getting the kind of quality that you need. When it comes to choosing affordable, but valuable, window blinds, you have a few options. Most of the cost of your blinds will be determined by material type, after all, you can’t just skimp on getting smaller blinds than you need like you can with some other products. If you don’t want to wait, but still want to see how it will all look in your space, contact us to speak to one of our skilled designers about an in-home consultation. If you’re wanting to learn more first, here is a quick guide on the affordability of different blind products.

Wooden Window Blinds

There is always something so charming and natural about adding real wood to your home, isn’t there? However, when it comes to affordability, wooden blinds are not exactly your best option. Real wood can be expensive, although it does depend on what variety of wood you’re after. Further, wood might not last as long as you expect, because it swells and shrinks based on the humidity of your home.

If you love the real-wood look but you want something more affordable, you can compromise on the faux wood. It doesn’t quite capture the same charm, but it is still a lovely option.

Vinyl or PVC Blinds

Plastic-like materials, including vinyl and PVC, are the more affordable window blind option. These materials are cheaper to make and manufacture into blinds. Plus, they also provide a great deal of durability and aren’t as impacted by moisture changes as wood is. That means you can also delay replacing them for a longer period of time, which saves you money too. We offer a few options in this range and can point you to the most valuable option for you.

Vertical Blinds

Vertical blinds are known as an affordable way to cover things like your patio door and the windows next to it. Vertical blinds tend to be thicker than horizontal ones, but they are still made out of the same materials. Vinyl and PVC options will be affordable, faux wood are a little less so, and real wood will be the highest-priced item of them all, but is often worth it for those who want it.

INSTALLING COMMERCIAL WINDOW SHADES FOR YOUR BUSINESS

The process of getting commercial window shades installed in your Milton business may seem a bit more complex than an installation at your home. You need to consider style and function, but also your business goals. And, there may be other stakeholders you need to bring in on the decision between commercial blinds and shades, or other key decisions in the process. The team at Milton Blinds can make it simple for you in two ways:

  1. Contact us to speak with one of our design experts to book an in-office consultation to take out any guesswork about if your choice will look right in your
  2. Or, if you want to learn more and take a slower approach, just follow this step-by-step guide.

Identify Where You Need Window Coverings

Where in your business environment do you need coverings? Most of the windows in your property will likely need some kind of commercial shade. Especially considering those windows that might put glare onto a computer screen or someone’s workspace. Also, pay special attention to the windows right next to where you will seat customers or where they will wait. Those are the spots light and privacy control matter most.

Consider a Consultation

Any window expert with experience working on commercial properties can help you make better decisions for your commercial window shades. They can help you choose which windows need coverings and, most importantly, which type. At your front windows, you may need something which doesn’t block onlookers’ views of your business at all, to help bring them in. Or, for privacy reasons, you might want to entirely block out the view from these windows. Commercial window covering experts can help you.

Which Style and Color Works?

Once you’ve narrowed down on your type of window covering you also have options for styles and colors. The catalog can be quite large, so take your time looking through it but also focus on your priorities. Your window coverings need to do more than just function, they also need to contribute to the atmosphere you need to cultivate. Your atmosphere might be relaxed, modern, energizing, or something else entirely.

Consider Motorization

Motorization is one of the most important advances in commercial motorized shades. Your staff may not have time to constantly adjust the blinds or shades based on the height of the sun. It may even disturb dining customers to adjust them. Motorization can do it automatically, potentially from anywhere in your business, depending on the size of your space and the sophistication of the blinds you choose.

Get Professional Installation

Commercial shades look better and last longer when installed by professionals. There’s no getting around that fact. But you’re in luck, we can help.

Choose Milton Blinds

GOVERNMENT CHANGES REGULATIONS FOR CORDED WINDOW COVERINGS

In 2019 Health Canada announced that they were going to limit corded window coverings. As of May 2021, those regulations have come into effect. Are your blinds outdated and potentially unsafe for children? We have options that can make your home look great and give you privacy and light control, all while abiding by the new guidelines. We have a wide selection of options that are safe, including automated window coverings. Now is a great time to get any new blinds as we have a 15% off blackout blinds this spring for a limited time.

Changed Regulations

Unfortunately, roughly one Canadian child per year is strangled to death in blind cords, and in Canada there have been a total of 39 deaths from window cord strangulations since 1998. Health Canada sought to stop these accidents by changing the rules surrounding the length of blind cords and the size of the loops allowed on the end of them. All products made in Canada, whether custom made or off the shelf, must now abide by these regulations.

Health Canada says they “strongly encourage” parents and caregivers to replace their current corded window coverings with those that meet the new regulations. This is not mandatory, but it is much safer. As Canadians buy new window coverings, they will only have the option to choose products which meet the new guidelines, so everyone should be up to date relatively soon.

Which blinds should you pick? Automated window blinds are among the safest options as they do not have any closing mechanism or cord that could strangle a child. But there are many other options that also meet the new regulations too.

Your Blind Options

Manufacturers and retailers like Milton Blinds had plenty of time to adjust to the new regulations from Health Canada. We have many automated window coverings and those with other closing mechanisms which are suitable under the new regulations. You can get improved safety and beauty in your home with our high-quality blind options. These blinds can even increase the value of your home. Here are some of the options we have that can work for you:

  • Roman shades
  • Vertical blinds
  • Roller blinds
  • Roller shades
  • Honeycomb shades
  • Zebra blinds
  • Dual shades
  • Vision blinds

For a limited time in spring 2022, we’re having a 15% off sale on the blackout styles of these blinds. Plus, when you look through our catalogue, you can find many other styles in these blind types to accentuate the style of your home. Talk with our professionals if you need some style guidance or help to make your decision.

Why Update Your Blinds in Milton?

It’s not just about meeting the new regulations. Automated window blinds and other options can help your home get a fresh, modern look. They can give you more convenience, privacy, and energy efficiency. There are many reasons to update your blinds in Milton.

SHOULD I STAY OR SHOULD I GO?

The average person moves about 11 times in a lifetime.  While some people may stay in a home for many years, others may often move from place to place.  It is an influential factor when purchasing home furnishing, making decisions regarding upgrades, home expansions, or home renovations.

Owning a home is a huge personal investment.  It is more than likely the most expensive purchase of your life and will cost the most to maintain out of all the items you purchase in life.  Between utility bills (hydro, water, electricity, gas), property taxes, insurance, maintenance (furnace, roof, windows, floors, plumbing), and mortgage, for a high population, this will be the majority of someone’s paycheck.

Maintaining a home takes time, decisions, and money.  There is an advantage to educating yourself before making these decisions as certain choices will increase the value of your home, and others will retain that price or decrease it.

Here is a safe checklist to use when purchasing window blinds for your home:

  1. Resale Value
  2. Curbside Appeal
  3. Likeability to the Masses
  4. Functionality
  5. Energy Efficiency

Questions about blinds to ask yourself:

  • Am I choosing a window treatment that is commonly used for this space? Does it make sense to have this product in this room?
  • Does my home’s exterior have continuity? Does this product enhance the exterior view of my home?
  • Would this type of blind have a broad appeal? Is it neutral in color and subtle yet complimenting the existing décor?
  • Is this window treatment easy to operate? Should I add motorization to this blind?
  • Does this window covering solution effectively help regulate heat?

If you’re unsure of these answers to your blind questions, have a window covering specialist at Milton Blinds guide you during an in-home consultation to make the best decision about your window blinds for your home.  Complimentary shop at home consultations offered in Milton and surrounding areas.

At Milton Blinds, we have a large selection of Roller shades and Roller blinds to choose from.  We have hues of grays, taupe, mineral colors, browns, beiges, creams, and ivory, along with many shades of warm white and cool white. Roller shade opaqueness varies, presenting options in every category of privacy, ultraviolet protection, and heat control.  Roller blinds can be solid in color, textured, or patterned.  We categorized our roller shades into two categories:

  • Solar Screen Roller Blinds
  • Designer Fabric Roller Shades

Solar screen roller blinds are often used for commercial spaces such as office blinds, hospital blinds, doctor office blinds, commercial blinds, sometimes residential interior blinds, patio door blinds, and outdoor blinds.

Designer fabric roller shades are most often used for home window blinds, such as:

  • Blackout bedroom blinds
  • Kitchen blinds
  • Laundry room blinds
  • Living room blinds
  • Front door blinds

We also have had some clients use them for office blinds (especially in the design industry).

COMMERCIAL WINDOW BLINDS BLOCK THE NOISE SO YOU CAN FOCUS

Are you looking to boost productivity in your office? You may not think of office blinds as one large productivity tool, but they absolutely can be. Plus, a custom window covering solution can help make your space look more purposeful and elegant. They can bring samples and show you what our offerings would look like in your office. If you’d like to learn more about how office blinds can help, here are some of the distractions that window blinds can help reduce.

Distracting Sounds

Thick, fabric-based window coverings can help absorb sound so that less of it gets to your ear and keeps you from being able to focus. It’s not as good as sound-proofing treatments, but it can help dull conversation from meeting rooms, from the office next to you, or light traffic on the road. Thin options like vinyl and window tinting won’t work, but roller blinds and Roman blinds may give you the relief you need from some more annoying kinds of background noise. We can help you choose blinds with this in mind.

Distracting Lights

Do you or your employees struggle with glare on their screens? Is the light through one of your windows overwhelming, especially at a particular time of day? Commercial window blinds and other window treatments can help. Window tinting can reduce glare and always protect your building from solar heat gain. If you want a flexible option that sometimes blocks light, roller blinds and other blinds are good options.

Distracting Visuals

If you find that you or your staff are distracted by the activity outside of your office building, or distracted by the activity beyond your glass walls, then window coverings and window film can help. Window film can be translucent enough to let in light but opaque enough to obscure your view of people and other objects. You might see a blob, but it’s not so distracting. Consider it for external and internal windows too.

Distracting Looks

How do your old office blinds look? Sometimes old, faded, and damaged blinds become a distraction themselves. These old blinds date your space and make it feel old and stuffy, which is not exactly conducive to work. Switching your old blinds out for new, modern window treatments that can make your whole space look more stylish and help your employees feel more motivated. It’s great to make customers and clients more comfortable too. Because the impression you make on them always counts.

Your Options for Commercial Window Treatments

There are plenty of ways to get the window treatments you need in your office. Here are six of the most popular options for commercial window coverings:

  • Roller shades: Roofer shades are one sheet of fabric or other material that you can roll down over your windows and back up. They can be very thick to block out light or thinner and more decorative if that’s what your office needs.
  • Vertical blindsVertical commercial blinds are an excellent option for offices that need more flexibility with their commercial window coverings. By pulling them back when closed, you can provide one area of the office complete shade and another some beautiful sun. That’s great when employees have competing needs.
  • Window tinting: This is a kind of vinyl you place on the outside of the office building that helps make the whole space more comfortable and even less expensive to cool. Window tinting provides glare reduction, UV protection, solar heat gain, and light reflectance for both your interior and exterior.
  • Window film: Window film is more decorative than tinting, although it still provides practical benefits like privacy. The film can be opaque or translucent and is a great option for exterior or interior glass.
  • Decal logos: Screen printed logos can be put on the roller shades you have so that windows have branding on them even when you close them.
  • Shutters: Shutters are often a residential option, but they can work in certain office environments too. Especially if your office is a converted home, shutters can look beautiful and provide all of the functionality you need.

FOUR FACTORS TO CONSIDER WHEN CHOOSING OFFICE BLINDS

Are you choosing new office blinds in Oakville? Your business has very different needs for shutters or blinds than your home might. Blinds can be a significant investment that should last many years, so it is important to make the right choice for your current business needs and future business needs. We offer at-business consultations, so you always get it right. Just in case we can’t be there to help out, here are four factors you should consider when choosing office blinds:

  1. Motorized Blinds

How convenient will it be for your staff or customers to adjust the blinds whenever they need to without any trouble? Glare and heat can break concentration and make your employees uncomfortable, which will undermine your office or business environment. You want to make it easy for your blinds to be adjusted. Properties with large windows or glass walls can benefit from motorized blinds or even set them to a timer so that they open and close automatically. Be sure to ask about motorized options during your consultation.

  1. Privacy Concerns

Many businesses want to create a private and professional atmosphere, such as lawyer’s offices, medical centers, and other professionals. Others might want to create a private and intimate setting, like restaurants, event venues, and more. Either way, you need blinds that can create that privacy.

Popular Oakville blinds that fit the bill include vertical blinds, which can cover large glass surfaces and be drawn back partially when you don’t need as much privacy. No matter your business, our design experts will work with you to pinpoint a solution that is both practical for your needs and complementary to your existing décor.

  1. Good Looks

Blinds and shutters can make a big difference in the look of your business. You want window dressing options that help create the ambiance you’re looking for, and that support your brand image. If you want to be seen as reliable and traditional, blinds that reflect that are best. Cutting-edge, leading brands may want newer designs. Our talented staff can help you find the window covering option that fits your aesthetic best.

Popular Oakville blinds that might fit the bill are endless, from roller blinds to Roman blinds. Our experts can help you choose a design that’s right for you.

  1. Price and Longevity

As with most business decisions, you need to strike a balance between the quality of the product and the price of the product. You want your blinds or shutters to last but not take up too much of your budget. The experts at Milton Blinds can help you strike the right balance.
